Design Victoria 2024: Surrender
Created for the Launch Party of Design Victoria, Surrender welcomed partygoers to immerse themselves in the calm of light and shadows, colour and texture. Built in collaboration with Jamie Montgomery-Kerr from Cedar and Soil, the garden was intended to draw the viewer into the sensory experience, to slow down and touch the plants. When everyone is so busy with the noise of modern life and notifications, the garden encouraged the viewer to surrender to the experience, to take a breath and relax into the grounding beauty of plants.
Custom modular boxes were built by local carpenter Josh Montgomery who used salvaged fir and cedar. The boxes were made with traditional joinery with the intention of being easily taken apart, resulting in a custom designed movable garden. It was important to Jenn that the garden be accessible to anyone, showing that good design doesn’t require home ownership. Plants included Japanese Snowbell, New Zealand Hair Sedge ‘Capuccino’ and ‘Frosty Curls,’ Globeflower ‘Cheddar,’ Salvia ‘Blue By You,’ Yarrow, and Iris.
